Product Introduction
Nitroglycerin belongs to a group of medications called nitrates that are prescribed to prevent angina (chest pain) caused by coronary artery disease. It is also used to relieve angina that has already occurred. Nitroglycerin works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart while reducing its workload. It prevents angina when used regularly, over a long period of time, or just before exercise or a stressful event.
Nitroglycerin is available only with your doctor’s prescription.
Uses of Nitroglycerin
It is prescribed to treat and prevent an immediate heart attack (chest pain). This pain is usually caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.
To prevent and treat acute angina
To treat chronic angina
To treat left ventricular failure
Nitroglycerin works by affecting the blood vessels to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart. Increased blood flow can help reduce or eliminate the pain caused by angina. These medications are usually placed under the tongue so that they are absorbed more quickly and take effect, especially when a person is having an angina attack.
Mechanism of action of Nitroglycerin
The function of Nitroglycerin is that by releasing nitric oxide, it activates the enzyme guanylyl cyclase and subsequently guanosine triphosphate to guanosine diphosphate and then monophosphate, which leads to relaxation of the smooth muscles of the vascular wall.
